Swamp Angel

In the style of a classic tall tale, SWAMP ANGEL brings readers into the amazing pioneer-era life of Angelica Longrider--the greatest woodswoman in all of Tennessee. Although Angelica accomplished many feats (such as building her first log cabin at the age of two), this picture book concentrates on her efforts to defeat Thundering Tarnation, a huge bear that has been stealing food from the good people trying to settle in the great state of Tennessee. At first, the menfolk scoff at the idea of a woman doing battle with such a fierce creature, but Angelica just ignores their comments. After the men fail to bring down the big bear, Angelica finally gets her chance to prove that she's the only one who's brave enough--and strong enough--to defeat the terrible and terrifying Thundering Tarnation. The American primitive style illustrations were created with oil paints on birch, cherry, and maple veneers.
